BC Ferries selects Wärtsilä’s LNG Propulsion Technology

In January 2020, BC Ferries placed a new order with the technology group Wärtsilä to supply an integrated system comprising a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant, dual-fuel engines and electrical propulsion system for its latest Salish Class vessel. The ship will be built by Remontowa Shipbuilding (RSB), located in Gdansk, Poland.

Three ferries built previously by RSB with Wärtsilä engines fuelled by LNG have already been delivered. The 107-meter long Salish Class ferries carry 600 passengers and crew, and up to 138 vehicles. They operate between the city of Vancouver and ports on Vancouver Island.

The equipment, scheduled for delivery in Q3 2020, includes three Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel engines, a Wärtsilä LNGPac fuel storage, supply and control system and a Wärtsilä low loss concept (LLC) power distribution system.

“We are proud to extend our fleet of environmentally sustainable and highly efficient Salish Class ferries. The Wärtsilä LNG solutions enable us to reliably serve our customers while helping to protect the pristine waters of British Columbia,” stated Mark Collins, president & CEO of British Columbia Ferry Services.
