DSBr safely Repairs Damaged Hull in Four Days

Damen Shiprepair Brest (DSBr) successfully repaired damage on the hull of LNG Methane Princess, a 266-meter-long LNG carrier within four days in January 2019.

The timeliness of the repair was essential as LNG Methane Princess was ineligible to charter until the vessel was repaired. A collision with a harbor tug during berthing at Punta Europa LNG Terminal in Equatorial Guinea caused damage to aft starboard side above the waterline. Once the ship arrived at Milford Haven LNG Terminal in the UK the DSBr team made the necessary repairs while the vessel was afloat and had residual gas in the tank. By doing this, the ship was able to deploy immediately after repairs were completed without the need to cool the gas for an additional three to four days.

DSBr prepared for the ship’s arrival by meeting with the client and preparing for safety protocols. Upon arrival, a Shore-certified chemist assessed the risk and deemed the work area safe. Then a platform was erected on the side of the vessel in order repair the damage to the hull. After the repairs were completed and certified, the hull was painted.

DSBr’s competency and quick action ensured that the client had minimal downtime and all parties worked in a safe and controlled environment.
