Malta Freeport supports Environmental Initiatives

CMA CGM’s container ship, Containerships Polar, stopped at Malta Freeport Terminals during its maiden voyage from Asia to the Netherlands. While in Malta, the vessel delivered 560 containers and marked the country’s first ever LNG-fueled containership to visit.

According to Alex Montebello, Malta Freeport’s CEO, “Malta Freeport reiterates its commitment towards the environment and supports CMA CGM’s initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of its vessels.  CMA CGM, one of Malta Freeport’s shareholders, has been a pioneer in environmental protection and has implemented numerous initiatives to make its fleet more eco-responsible. By 2022, the Group will have taken delivery of 20 vessels powered by LNG.”

Konrad Mizzi, Malta’s Tourism Minister, noted that the country is working to improve environmental standards in Birzebbuga. Along with utilizing sea vessels that run on greener fuels, Malta is also undertaking other initiatives including afforestation, building a recreational park, and implementing sound conscious cranes.

In an effort to establish itself as a key player in the region, Malta now supports routes between the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and the United States.
