AIDA Cruises’ second Cruise Ship to use LNG as Fuel

AIDA Cruises’ second cruise ship will be operated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel. A 140-meter-long, 42-meter-wide, and four-deck-high floating engine room unit (FERU) for AIDAcosma is on its way to the Meyer-Werft shipyard in Papenberg, Germany. The FERU contains four dual-fuel engines and three LNG tanks with a total capacity of 3,550 cubic meters.

AIDAcosma’s premiere season starts in May 2021 with cruises to Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea. The company is planning to put its third LNG-fueled cruise ship into service in 2023.

The cruise line is already investing in the future use of synthetic liquefied gas and renewable fuels, such as biofuels. This year, AIDAperla will be equipped with the largest battery storage system ever installed on a passenger ship to date. In 2021, the first trials with fuel cells will be conducted on AIDAnova.
