LNG Imports Help New England Meet Cold Weather Energy Demand

Two of Excelerate Energy L.P.’s floating storage regasification units (FSRUs), the Exemplar and the Express reached a peak flow rate of over 800,000 MMBTU per day of natural gas on February 1st as they discharged in parallel through Excelerate’s proprietary offshore bouys at the Northeast Gateway Deepwater Terminal, located offshore Boston.

Demand for natural gas from residential customers rises in New England during the coldest parts of the year, which has forced generators in the past to resort to burning dirtier fuels, such as oil. LNG imports from the Northeast Gateway have provided a stable supply of natural gas to meet demand for clean energy.

The terminal responds to local market conditions in real time and consists of a dual submerged turret-loading buoy system which allows for the connection of FSRUs which have the onboard capability to vaporize LNG and deliver natural gas directly into the existing subsea HubLine pipeline operated by Enbridge’s Algonquin Gas Transmission.

“Deliveries of LNG directly into the Algonquin system helps to bring much-needed market stability and fuel security to the Northeast, an added benefit for consumers,” stated Excelerate’s Managing Director Steven Kobos.
