Qatargas installs Artificial Coral Ridges off the cost of Banana Island

Following Qatar’s Environmental Development pillar, Qatargas Operating Company Limited (Qatargas) and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) installed two hundred artificial coral ridges near Banana Island. The project stemmed from Qatargas’ interest in protecting the country’s offshore environment.

During the project, several Marine Environmental Assessments (MEAs) were performed to select the best location. Once the site was selected, surveys were performed to ensure the artificial coral matched the natural environment. Further, the coral installments were created locally and with sustainable materials.

In the past, Qatargas has also worked to protect the environment. For example, during LNG expansion projects in 2007, Qatargas relocated 4500 living corals in order to reduce harm to local marine life.

Qatargas is a leader in man-made coral installments, ultimately helping marine life thrive and furthering the company’s commitment to protecting biodiversity.
