Qatargas powers LNG vessels with Boil-Off Gas

Qatargas Operating Company has powered its chartered conventional LNG vessels using LNG boil-off gas during unloading operations at Japanese LNG terminals. Qatargas’ Japanese buyers helped implement the new program.

The LNG vessel Al Jasra successfully performed the first operation while discharging at the Niigata LNG Terminal in October 2019.

The boil-off gas is naturally produced due to the evaporation of LNG when stored. The gas must be removed in order to maintain the pressure in the cargo tank. The new program reduces greenhouse gas and other harmful emissions over the course of the discharge operation.
