Wärtsilä aided in Tornio Manga LNG Terminal Start

Northern Finland opened its Tornio Manga LNG terminal, the largest of its kind in the Nordic region. While the project was led by Manga LNG Oy, a joint venture, Wärtsilä was asked to provide support based on its successful history with project management, especially in the field of LNG.

Wärtsilä provided a complete solution for unloading, storing, regasifying, piping, truck loading and bunkering LNG. Additionally, Wärtsilä will provide maintenance service for the terminal for the next decade.

The LNG that will come to the terminal will support Outokumpu’s Tornio steel mill as well as local mines, and general consumers. The terminal also includes truck access for easier delivery.

Manga LNG Oy’s Chairman of the Board said, “The Tornio Manga LNG terminal is creating a long-term platform for cost-efficient, environmentally more sustainable energy supply in Northern Europe. The beneficiaries include industrial and mining companies, shipping and road transportation companies, power and heat utilities in this area. Wärtsilä, with special value-adding capabilities in this field, was a natural choice to participate in the project and a valuable partner.”

Wärtsilä’s VP for Engine Power Plants noted that this endeavor demonstrates the company’s expertise in the LNG industry.
